My Self-Tan Routine

A few years ago I started to learn a lot more about skincare and how important it is to take care of the skin you have. I learned all about anti-aging products and how important it is to protect your skin in the sun. I now use SPF 100 every time I am outside. I want to do everything I can to prevent skin cancer and to prevent wrinkles/all signs of aging. I don’t know about you but I am trying to look as young as I can for as long as I can LOL and that all starts with taking good care of your skin.

Now just because you’re taking care of your skin doesn’t mean you can’t have a gorgeous bronzed tan! I am all about self tanner now because there is just something about being tan that makes me feel much more confident and pretty.

With that being said, I have tried a ton of different self tanners over the years and I have narrowed it down to my top 3 favorites!

1. Tan Ceuticals CC Cream Dark

I have been using this for about 3 months now and I absolutely LOVE it! So this is a lotion, not a mousse like the other two I use but I actually really like that because it is going to give you a gorgeous tan but also hydrate your skin. This needs to still be applied with a mitt (never use your bare hand) This tanning lotion also helps firm, tone and tighten your skin. Every time I use this tanning lotion I am blown away by how dark it makes me. I apply this at night, it dries just like a regular lotion so I wait a few minutes and then I get dressed. This does NOT stain my sheets. I wake up in the morning, rinse it off in the shower and then I am a bronzed goddess. This stuff is truly incredible AND it smells like coconuts…which who doesn’t love that!

2. St. Tropez Extra Dark Bronzing Mousse

This is such a great tanning mousse that I have been using for over a year and every time I use it I look like I just got back from the islands. It makes you SO dark! With this tanning mousse I like to apply it in the morning after I shower and then wear loose clothing during the day and wash it off at night before bed that way it does not get on my sheets. The most important thing to do before you use this mousse is to prep your skin which I will talk about more in this post.

3. NKD Skin Tinted Tan Mousse Dark

If you are not wanting to splurge on a self tanner then this is the one for you! It is under $20 y’all! This mousse is free of perfumes, parabens, and alcohol which is going to give you the most beautiful tan that is good for your skin. It is non-toxic, organic and cruelty free. What I love most is it has no scent and it dries incredibly fast. It gives you such a beautiful, natural tan.

It is SUPER important to prep your skin before applying self tanner to help ensure you’re getting the most out of your application and to avoid any dry spots/streaks.

1. Shave- Very important step to make sure that your tan goes on evenly and smoothly.

2. Exfoliate- This is a MUST! It is so important to exfoliate your entire body before applying any self tanner. This is going to get rid of any dry patches and really help smooth out your skin which will help give you a gorgeous, even tan.

These are my two favorite exfoliators to use before I tan. Both work so well and they smell amazing too!

Soap and Glory Summer Scrubbin’

Tree Hut Moroccan Rose Shea Sugar Scrub

St. Tropez Tanning Mitt

This is under $7 and I love it. I use it multiple times before buying a new one.

  • Do NOT apply any self tanner with your bare hands. It will stain them. Always use a mitt!
  • Always try to wear dark, baggy clothing after you apply any self tanner. NEVER wear white.
  • Wait at least 8 hours before washing off to give your tan enough time to develop.
  • Using the mitt, apply your self tanner in circular motions.
  • For your hands and feet NEVER go in with full product on your mitt. I do my entire body and then whatever is left on the mitt I lightly go over the tops of my feet and hands.

I usually self tan once a week and that day right now is on Friday nights. I like to shower, shave and exfoliate, apply my tan to my entire body, except my face and then get in some baggy clothes and drink wine and just relax, because I’m a homebody and rarely go anywhere on Friday nights LOL so that day works best for me, and then I am tanned and ready for the weekend and that is usually when I shoot a lot of my looks so I like to be super dark for those.

To help the longevity of your tan, make sure to stay away from any body washes or sunscreens that have a lot of alcohol or scents because they will strip off the color. To help maintain my tan, I make sure to use a non scented lotion all over my body everyday after I shower.

I hope this helped babes and if you have any questions at all do not hesitate to reach out!

XOXO, Britt
